    PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

    Dear Atkinson Families,

I cannot overstate how overjoyed we are to have your children back in school today! It has been a long 26 days without them.

Throughout the teacher strike, our diverse community had diverse experiences. Classified staff 皇家华人ed during the stoppage, and most were assigned new duties that required them to pivot quickly into roles supporting coaching for students. The office staff and I came in each day and experienced the absolute meaninglessness of our roles without children. Families had a variety of experiences, too. Some were able to show their support on the picket lines. Some faced acute challenges as they struggled to make day-to-day plans for childcare. Students missed their peers and school staff. But today, at last, we are all so glad to be back together serving in the roles that bring us meaning, purpose, and joy; and we are so grateful to be a part of this resilient and supportive community.

This morning, I met with staff to process all that’s happened and plan for the return of students this week. Today, teachers conducted special activities to engage students and support them in processing the emotions and experiences they’ve had over the last 26 days. Tomorrow, we will be re-teaching students our common area routines and finishing the day with an all school assembly.

I want to thank you for your patience and collaboration as we come back to school somewhat abruptly. In the coming days, I’ll be sharing more about the plans for a shortened winter break, report cards, conferences, and other adjustments that we will need to make. Next week, I will host two parent coffees after drop-off. The one on Thursday will be in English and the one on Friday will be in Spanish.

For this week, please join me Thursday on the upper playground after drop-off to enjoy some coffee and pastries provided by our teaching staff as we express our gratitude to all of you for your support and patience through this unprecedented November.

    Thrilled to be back,

Picking a mascot has been an important part of that journey.
