    Principal s Newsletter

    December 18, 2020

    Dear Maplewood Families,

We wish you health, rest and lots of breaks from screen time over the holidays!  Board games and cards are sounding great to me right now as does a good book or two.

This is a wonderful time of year, and even during times of the pandemic it is also very busy and can be stressful. As the adults scurry around preparing for the excitement of the holidays, children can also feel the stress and exhaustion brought on by this business. Finding time to just be together without feeling the pressure of the typical hustle of the holidays may be exactly what you and your family needs.

When we return, 2020 will be behind us-and I for one am looking forward to 2021!  Happy New Year-hope we are back together soon……in person!

    Book bag program:

    1/6 - M-Z families

    1/13 -  A-L families

    1/20 - M-Z families

    1/27 - A-L families

    Moving?

Please return Maplewood electronic devices and library books at the Book Exchange times or contact the office to arrange a time. (or a neighbor can bring your items to the Book Exchange times).

Book Exchange happens on Wednesday's (unless PPS is closed) from 7:15-9:00 am,  and 3:00 to 5:30 PM.

    School Spirit-Maplewood Monday’s

We are trying to 皇家华人 our school spirit going-on Monday’s we want to encourage students, staff and parents if able, to wear Maplewood gear as a way to show our school spirit.

    From Wilson Principal:

    Dear Wilson Community,

The Wilson High School Renaming Committee has been 皇家华人ing tirelessly over the last few months to develop an inclusive and equity-minded process for selecting the new name for Wilson High School.  We developed a comprehensive to document our 皇家华人, we invited various stakeholders to share ideas, we participated in numerous community meetings, and we combed through more than 600 community recommendations.

After much spirited discussion and collaboration, we have narrowed our choices to five finalists:  Harriet Wilson, Sojourner Truth, Mercedes Deiz, Beatrice Morrow Cannady, and Ida B. Wells.  All of these remarkable women meet the district naming protocols, they align with our committee’s , and they reflect multiple community recommendations.  I want to acknowledge that there are many other worthy candidates who could have been on this short list.  I hope that other schools and communities choose  to honor and recognize other sheroes and heroes who have been overlooked and ignored.

Before the Renaming Committee makes the final recommendation to the Superintendent on January 10, we would like to hear from our students, families, staff, alumni, and community members one more time.  Please take a look at and be sure to share your thoughts prior to January 1.  Your input and participation are really important to us.

    With Gratitude and Respect,

    Filip Hristi?, Ed.D.

    Dear Maplewood Families,

I hope everyone had a nice Veteran’s Day! We had a beautiful fall day. It was a great day to be out and honor our Veteran’s. Along with honoring our veterans, November is a time to think about all for which we are grateful.  This has been a long, hard year.  I hope all of you can think of people, times or events for which you are grateful.  Even though my boys are now young adults, we still find ways to show gratitude to others.

    Dear Maplewood Families,

I hope you are all healthy and doing well as we continue to move through this school year with our distance learning. We are now in November which is always a busy month at school. The end of the term is this Thursday.  No school on Friday as it is a teacher 皇家华人 day.  Next Wednesday is Veteran’s Day- no school. Later in the month we have conferences and then Thanksgiving.  That puts us into December. November is always a time for us to be thankful- even in these challenging times, I am able to find so many things for which I am thankful.  Our Maplewood community is strong and I am so grateful for the support I have seen from families, staff and students.  We are resilient and will get through all of this.

    Dear Maplewood Families,

Happy Halloween!  Please stay safe celebrating Halloween during the pandemic. I’m guessing there will be a lot of creative masks this year that serve two purposes.

I know I’m stating the obvious but next week will be a big week as Tuesday, November 3rd is Election Day.  Many of our teachers have been doing lessons on voting and how elections 皇家华人 in our country.  This is also a great opportunity for you to talk with your children about the importance of participating in elections as citizens.  My oldest son got to vote this year for the first time!  He felt very proud to take part in the election.

Election Day-The district has provided an in-depth election toolkit that covers a variety of topics.  Keep an eye out for that communication.  PPS leaders are hoping for things to be peaceful in our community on the day of the election and the days that follow, yet they are aware that 皇家华人 has seen a lot of unrest recently and are preparing for the possibility of buildings perhaps being targeted by protests.

Toolbox is launching!  We are using our Climate team this year (Nikki, William, Liberty, Jessica, and myself) to support our Toolbox efforts.  At our first meeting, we came up with a sequence for staff to use.

*A great, short video for teachers and parent/guardians about Toolbox (safe youtube link provided):

    For students:

*An introduction to Toolbox for 3rd-5th graders, bonus is that the kids speak with Australian accents!

    * This is a great toolbox and Kendall has color copies if you want to email her.

    * Kendall made this short to explain What Toolbox is for families and students.

    * This is a short Kendall made on what the tools are- more for the younger students.

Kendall will be visiting classrooms for a total of 6 lessons each that will help support Toolbox.  She is currently visiting K-1 and then will do 2nd-3rd in January and then 4th-5th in March.  As a school, we reinforce Toolbox through our think sheets and also our Check In/Check Out intervention.

In the past, we have done monthly assemblies to support students learning the Toolbox tools.   Feel free to reach out for any Toolbox support.  Also, feel free to give any feedback  on this to our Climate Committee (Nikki, Liberty, William, Jessica, and Kendall).

Students can now access Google Chat at chat.google.com and it is recommended that staff also move to this platform where there is more functionality.

We did not know that staff would lose their Hangouts Chat groups, but you should be able to that content by searching within Gmail. All chat in Google Chat is archived. Please look for an official communication with more information in the next coming weeks.

    Youth Resource APP Now Available

We are very excited to share that we now have an app on the app store for PPS youth resources.

The app shares critical information around COVID-19 resources, Safe Oregon Tip line, Youth Line for suicidal ideation and mental health crisis, and many additional resources for youth and their families.

During our many discussions with high school students last year, they all reported that an app which can be downloaded on their phone would be the best way to provide needed support.  With the help of the REAHL (Recovery, Education and Action for Healthy Living) team, and the Student Success and Health department, we were able to make this a reality for our PPS students.  Please and share with everyone you know.

    Dear Maplewood Families,

We continue to have beautiful weather with brief periods of rain.  While at school today I was looking at how green and healthy our field looks.  It was freshly mowed today.  Again, we are looking forward to the day when our students are back playing soccer and running across the field.

Typically, around this time of year, I would be sending reminders about having students dress for the weather-chilly mornings and warm afternoons.

    Parent-Teacher Conferences

Conferences are still a few weeks away, November 23rd and 24th.  You will soon hear from your child’s teacher about a way to sign up for a time for a conference.  Be on the lookout for that information.

Supports for Families- PANDEMIC EBT UPDATE FOR FAMILIES

The Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS) was approved to provide additional Pandemic EBT (P-EBT) benefits to eligible students enrolled from July 1 - September 22. Similar to the spring, benefits are provided to children who receive free or reduced price school meals through the National School Lunch Program that are not attending school in-person.

Every child who is eligible will receive at least $100 and some will receive more benefits based on when school began. The initial $100 benefits were distributed on September 28th. If a child qualifies for any additional benefits beyond $100, this will be provided through a second deposit. Eligible students who receive Oregon SNAP benefits, or who received an Oregon EBT card in the mail with P-EBT benefits in the past, received these September P-EBT benefits on their existing Oregon EBT card. For lost EBT cards, families can request a new one by calling a local ODHS office or calling the EBT replacement line 1-855-328-6715.

If eligible families did not receive P-EBT benefits, they can send an email to the PPS Meal Benefits Office at mealbenefits@pps.net with the following information: Student name, school name, and parent contact information (address, phone). Once the student is verified as eligible an email will be sent to the P-EBT email address (ebt.schoolmeals@dhsoha.state.or.us) on the behalf of the family for follow up.

Maplewood staff and students use TOOLBOX in our classrooms and across our building.  TOOLBOX™ helps us all to be strong, effective, and kind. It helps us build resilience, self-mastery, and empathy for ourselves and others. As a simple metaphor, TOOLBOX enables us to use the inner “Tools” that already exist inside us. The strengths/assets-based common language of TOOLBOX is rooted in resilience, self-knowledge, self-awareness, and non-violence. When we as teachers/staff or parents/caregivers use and model TOOLBOX in our daily lives, we foster children’s abilities to manage their own emotional, social, and academic success.  Each month we will focus on a different tool.  Watch this newsletter for an explanation of the tool we are focusing on.

Monday October 12 was Indigenous People's Day!

The second Monday in October has been historically observed as Columbus Day - but with the advocacy of countless indigenous groups, Multnomah County has joined several leading cities and states in renaming it as Indigenous People's Day. This day serves to honor the countless contributions and innovations Indigenous People make to the arts, education, health, economy, environmental stewardship, and community that enhance the greater 皇家华人 area. It also serves as an acknowledgment of the United States' history of violence against Indigenous Peoples, including forced migration, broken treaties, and ongoing systems of oppression. Maplewood Elementary recognizes and honors our Indigenous community members, on this day and every day. To honor the holiday with your family, consider to talk about Indigenous history with your children.

September 15th through October 15th is LatinX Heritage Month!

This month recognizes and honors the enduring contributions and importance of LatinX Americans and celebrates the many heritages and cultures of the Americas.  The term “Latinx” relates to people of Latin American origin or descent and is used as a gender-neutral or non-binary alternative to Latino or Latina.  Maplewood Elementary would like to thank our LatinX families, students, teachers, and friends who contribute to the cultural wealth of our communities, and celebrate you every month of the year!  To honor this month with your family, consider:
